Sawan is observed as the holiest month in Hinduism. Legend has it that Lord Shiva drank poison through Samudra Manthan to get amrit (nectar) for saving the world. However, Goddess Parvati held his neck and saved him from the poison.
Sawan, is a pious month dedicated to Lord Shiva. People keep a fast on every Monday and is called as Sawan Ka Somwar. Tracing its etymology, Somwar or Monday is derived from the Sanskrit word, 'Soma' meaning Chandra, the Hindu deity, Moon.
To please Lord Shiva for the desired wish fulfillment, one must observe solah somwar (Sixteen Monday) fasts and the one, who takes a sankalp (vow) of performing Solah Somwar Vrat, gets blessed with all the desired wishes.
Monday is represented by Moon, which in turn symbolises Mind. Moon is placed on Lord Shiva's head. Lord Shiva is believed to discipline the mind of the spiritual aspirant and the devotees.
During Sawan, it is advised to avoid consuming non-vegetarian or tamasik food, common salt, alcohol, and certain offerings to Lord Shiva.
The Mahayogi loves kand-mool as per the shastras. His favourites include bhang, datura, milk, thandai and sweets white in colour.
As per legend, Shiva consumed the poison that was obtained during the ocean churning. Doing so, Datura emerged from his chest and ever since, it is believed to be his favourite flower.
