Mahatma Gandhi Punyatithi 2023 - 75th Punyatithi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi as we all know, is “The Father Of The Nation”. He was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. Mahatma Gandhi, also called Bapu, was an Indian revolutionist, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist who employed non-violent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India’s Independence from the British Raj. He adopted a simple lifestyle: he wore a hand-spun dhoti and ate simple food. The main goal of Bapu was to assist the rural Indian culture and promote Indian handicrafts. To get Swaraj ( Indian Independence), he started a non-cooperation movement where he asked people to revolt against the Britishers by peace, boycott British goods and burn any British clothing they possessed. He always favoured using our local products, handmade and handcrafted in India. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948, and was shot thrice by Nathuram Godse. This year marks as 75th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi’s death was mourned nationwide. The Government of India announced 30th January as Shaheed Diwas, Martyr’s Day or Sarvodaya Day. The Birla House site where he was assassinated is now a memorial called Gandhi Smriti, and the place where he was cremated near the Yamuna river in New Delhi is the Raj Ghat Memorial. Over a million people joined the five-mile-long funeral procession that took over 5 hours to reach Raj Ghat from Birla house, and another million watched the procession pass by. Mahatma Gandhi touched millions of hearts, and his movements inspired millions of people. Today too, we can find people who believe in and follow Gandhism as they follow the principles and ideas of Gandhiji.
